Dell Latitude E4300

Dell Latitude E4300

Business ultraportables are revered for what they bring to the table. They are priced at a premium and are expected to meet significant criteria. Since business travel accelerates wear and tear, durability is one of the main objectives. Several hours of battery life is no longer enough; a business ultraportable has to last all day, whether through a single battery or multiple ones. Ample connectivity features and future-proofed parts are equally important. The Dell Latitude E4300 ($2,789 direct) assumes a place among the elite of corporate laptops, venturing down paths that were uncommon in the Latitude line until now. (This model doesn't even have a true predecessor.) For the first time, a 13-inch widescreen, color options (blue, black, or red), and an illuminated keyboard are part of its arsenal. And when used in tandem, the two high-capacity batteries yielded over 8 hours of battery life.

Apple Macbook Pro 17-inch (Unibody)

Part media center, part workstation, the Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch has been revered over the years by a nation of professional photographers and film editors, not to mention average media folks who can't get enough of this thin-bodied cinematic wonder. When the Apple MacBook Pro 15-inch (Dual Graphics) and the MacBook 13-inch (Aluminum) launched with their "unibody" enclosures—in each case, a heavily promoted slab of aluminum that rids the frame of all detachable parts—a "uni-seventeen-incher" was clearly on the way. The Apple MacBook Pro 17-inch (Unibody) ($2,799 direct) is still the lightest and the prettiest media center laptop to house a maximum-resolution screen, and the changes are significant.

When it comes to desktop PCs, you don't have to spend a lot to get a lot. We give you the lowdown on getting more for less, and recommend seven great systems.

How low should you go when buying a desktop PC? If you just need a machine to meet basic computing needs—Web browsing, basic photo editing, playing music, writing e-mail, spreadsheet tracking—you can go pretty darn low. In fact, you can get a whole lot of computer for less than $500. And that's great news, particularly in today's economy.

Cheap desktops are perfect if your computing needs are modest, your budget is tight, or if you're looking for a second or third PC for your home. Cheap PCs are usually full-blown desktop PCs a mini-tower or small-form-factor desktop case. They often have optical drives installed (a DVD burner or a DVD/CD-RW combo drive), slots for adding system memory, and some expansion/upgrade potential (hard drive, PCI/PCIe card slots, graphics card slots).
